LIBRARY
The size of the present library is 60ft by 30ft. It can accommodate 120 readers. At present there are altogether 17,316 volumes of books in the library. There are 1144 titles in Burmese and 693 titles in Chin related books. There are 950 titles for Business studies related books and 260 titles for English language studies related books. In addition, there are 1500 books (in Chin Language), and 173 books (in Burmese Language). At the beginning of new academic year, each class is oriented in the use of the library. Rules and regulations of the library are noticed. The library serves as an information centre for acquiring theological and biblical knowledge and is opened to all churches, students and staff members of the University, and other organizations.
Encyclopaedia, Dictionaries, Bible Commentaries, Atlases, Handbooks, Year books, etc., are available to a certain extent. Reference books are set aside for use in connection with current courses. Books can be borrowed up to a period of the weeks. The availability of books in National language is still limited.
LIBRARY POLICY
Philosophy: An excellent library collection will provide total satisfaction.
Mission: To build a well-balanced collection that will meet the needs of the users.
Vision: The library collection in the next millennium is responsive to the changing needs of the users.
Objectives: The immediate aims of these policies are:
- to provide the right collection for the right readers at the right time.
- to support the academic and curricular needs of the institution.
- to offer items for leisure-time enjoyment and of general interest.
General Collection Management and Development Policies
Guided by the requirements of developing curriculum and by the existing holdings of the collection, and using the standard and trade bibliographies, the library should strive to build a balanced-collection where the best books in all subjects will have a place and all the areas of the curriculum will be properly represented.
General Priorities & Limitation Governing Selection
The primary objectives of professional selection shall be:
- To provide the curriculum with a variety of materials,
- To make available to faculty and students of a collection of materials that will enrich and support the curriculum, and
- To meet the educational needs of the clientele served.
Librarians’ Role
The librarian has the responsibility for the overall development of the Library collections to be as curriculum-driven as possible. The librarian will select or recommend the selection of materials in all disciplines.
The primary collection development tools are: circulation reports; faculty recommendations and patron requests and other considerations.
Faculty Participation
Determination of the educational resources of the CCU Library is a professional consideration of great magnitude, requiring the cooperative efforts of librarians, teaching faculty and the dean (Library Chairman).
Any CCU faculty member may recommend the purchase of books, serials, and media materials in his /her subject area or curriculum to the librarian.
For book recommendations, the librarian will review the recommended titles. Designated librarians in charge of the serials collection will review all serials requests in consultation with the dean.
The librarians encourage the active participation of faculty members in the selection process.
Students’ Role
Students, as prime users of the library, should be encouraged to contribute to the development of the collection by suggesting new titles and by identifying weaknesses in the holdings.
Acquisition
Acquisition is the process of obtaining materials. Acquisition work is a process of securing materials for the library’s collections, whether by purchase, as gifts or through exchange programs. This involves confirming that materials are available, verifying order information, identifying and selecting sources of materials, arranging for orders to be sent, allocating funds, keeping records, and producing reports on expenditures of funds.
Gifts/Donations
Gifts or book donations are welcomed, but as a rule, the library is the left free to integrate them with the rest of the collection. Unnecessary duplicates, superseded editions, obsolete subjects should be checked before accepting. There are no conditions required by the donor that interfere with book’s placement, use or circulation in the library.
Funding/Budgeting
The librarian is responsible for advising the university on the financial needs of the library, and for monitoring the library budget. The budget should cover library resources, office expenses, and conservation and binding (if appropriate). IT costs, equipment and furniture, and training and professional development. The budget should be allocated on an annual basis, and should be sufficient to enable the library to fulfill its aims and objectives. Librarians will participate in the preparation of the budget.
Weeding/Deselection
Deselection is used to mean the systematic removal of the non-core volumes from a collection area of the library. Also, it refers to rejecting, removing or weeding detracting materials from the library shelves to maximize the use of the resources.
Criteria for Deselection of Library Materials
- Appearance/ Condition-Books that are worn out, with yellow brittle or missing pages, badly printed, poorly bound or with significant disfigurement.
- Age of material
1) Any title in which the content is out-of-date
2) Information that is no longer accurate
3) Any title over 20 years old that is not on a standard list.
4) Textbooks after 20 years
5) Encyclopedias at least after 30 years
6) Almanacs, directories yearbooks- get latest editions and keep for
historical purpose 5 to 10 years.
7) Content- material that is poorly written or incorrect should be
removed.
Look for titles for which later editions may be available and
preferable.
- Shelf time-books that have not been checked out for three to more years should be considered for deselection.
Maintenance
The CCU library collections are maintained through preservation. Binding is a major means of preservation in that it reduces wear, simplifies handling, and reduces loss.
The continuing maintenance of the library collection is essential function in the library. It keeps the library collections current and accessible to users. If the physical condition of a material suggests removal but the content is irreplaceable, rebinding and repair are reconsidered. Some of the library materials are maintained for their historic significance and value. The library staff members who are assigned to repair damaged books and to bind the loose periodical titles or other materials. All damaged library materials are sent to the bindery section for repair.
RULES & REGULATIONS
1. Library will be opened from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM on all the University working days.
2. A student shall attend Library according to the Library hours given in the curriculum.
3. Students, faculty, staff and alumni of CCU, local church pastors and ministers, students from other colleges and university in Hakha are allowed to use CCU Library.
4. Only students, faculty and staff of CCU, local church pastors and ministers are allowed checking out the books.
5. Users must produce his/her identity card at the time of borrowing.
6. No book may be taken from Library without being charged.
7. Users are allowed to check out books as the followings.
a. Faculty – 10 books at a time for 60 days
b. Visiting/part time teacher – 10 books at a time for 30 days
c. Staff – 5 books at a time for 30 days
d. Final student – 6 books at a time for 15 days
e. Junior theology student – 4 books at a time for 15 days
f. Junior Business and English student – 3 books at a time for 15 days
8. All users should return books before or on the due date.
9. Extension for borrowed books – permitted seven days.
10. Fines for over-due book will be charged at the rate of kyats 500 per day for each book.
11. If the borrowed books is lost or damage, it shall be replaced, or if it cannot be replaced a triple amount of the price shall be charged.
12. No reference books, magazines and periodical are to be borrowed.
13. A graduating student shall return their borrowed books before graduation.
14. All the borrowed books must be returned before the final examination.
15. Marking, underlining, drawing and extra writing on the book with pen or pencil must be avoided.
16. Silence should be strictly maintained in and around the Library.
17. Mobile phone should be kept in silent mode in the Library
18. Students must keep quiet and are expected to put chairs back in the right place.
